Why trust ceiling repair to a professional

Professional ceiling repair: preparation and finishing
  • Save time and effort. Specialist quickly removes old layer (paint, plaster or wallpaper) and prepares the surface evenly.
  • Quality materials. Specialist recommends suitable mix (cement, gypsum or ready-made) and primer (Tikkurila, Kiilto, Casco) considering room moisture.
  • Safety and comfort. Professionals follow norms (min ceiling height, fire safety, ventilation). If needed, mould is removed and surface treated with antiseptic.
  • Professional ceiling repair guarantees that the finish (paint, plaster, panels or stretch) goes on without defects.

Work stages (typical process)

Ceiling repair stages: filling and levelling
  • Inspection and prep. Specialist assesses ceiling, checks old plaster, joints and moisture. Protects floor and furniture.
  • Removal of old finish. Loose plaster, old whitewash or paint removed. If suspended ceiling exists, frame and panels are dismantled.
  • Defect repair. Cracks, holes and dents filled with reinforcement tape and filler.
  • Levelling. Main filler layer at perimeter and corners, level check. Suspended ceiling profiles if needed. Each layer dries ~6–24 h.
  • Sanding. Surface sanded smooth. Dust removed.
  • Priming. Acrylic primer 1–2 coats (~0.1–0.2 l/m²). Improves adhesion of finish.
  • Final finish. Paint (Tikkurila Helmi, Beckers) or decorative plaster. For suspended/stretch ceiling: lights and fittings.

Materials, tools and types of finish

Ceiling repair uses fillers (cement, gypsum, ready-made), primers (Tikkurila, Kiilto ~0.1–0.2 l/m²), reinforcement mesh and corner beads, suspended ceiling profiles, finishes (stretch, paint, panels). Tools: trowels, sanding blocks, drill, level, plumb.

Choosing and buying materials

You can buy everything yourself or leave purchasing to the specialist. In practice: client buys filler/paint/panels, specialist buys «consumables» (mesh, beads, primer). Or specialist buys all materials.

Guarantee and handover

Ask the specialist to state the guarantee. E.g. «Guarantee on ceiling repair __ days from handover, covers defects.» Photo the finished ceiling. Work payment is not processed through Tyoon.

Safety and standards

  • Moisture and ventilation. Ceiling must be dry. In damp rooms use moisture-resistant mixes. Ventilate during and after work.
  • Fire safety and height. Finnish norms require min 2.4–2.5 m after suspended installation.
  • Vents and services. Ensure ventilation openings and access to services when removing old ceiling.
  • Waste. Dispose per Finnish rules (Kierrätys).
  • RYL standards. Internal ceiling repair falls under RYL finishing work.

Checklist before the specialist arrives

  • Clear furniture so the whole ceiling is accessible.
  • Remove old chandeliers and lights (unless agreed otherwise).
  • Water and power available.
  • Have paint/stretch fabric ready if you bought it yourself.
  • Tell the specialist about the space (mould etc.).
  • Check any time limits for repair (e.g. in apartment buildings).

FAQ

Can I buy materials myself and only pay for labour?

Yes. State in the request «Client buys materials, specialist does the work only». Ensure you have enough filler, primer and profiles (specialist can help calculate).

How long does ceiling filler take to dry?

Gypsum dries quickly (dry in 1–2 hours), cement 12–24 h. Full shrinkage in 1–2 days. Ceiling must be fully dry before priming.

What is the difference between suspended and stretch ceiling?

Suspended: metal frame with boards (drywall, aluminium strips). Stretch: PVC fabric on a track. Choice depends on ceiling height and design.

What does the guarantee cover?

Guarantee covers installation defects (sagging, cracks, finish peeling). Usually a few months after handover. Specify desired guarantee period in the request.

Why is there a smell after the repair?

If acrylic filler or solvent-based paint was used, smell may last 1–2 days. Ventilate. For living spaces water-based odourless paint (Tikkurila, Beckers) is recommended.
