Law and safety

Electrical installation work in Finland is strictly regulated by law and standards. For low-voltage networks (up to 1000 V) the SFS 6000 series applies. Any installation must comply with these standards and Tukes (the safety authority) safety requirements. Under SFS 6000-5-55 (clause 559.5.1) both old ceiling sockets and new DCL systems (European standard) are permitted. In new construction, DCL sockets and suspension hooks are preferred, although old ceiling roses (kukkaruusu) are not prohibited.

All fixed electrical installation work (running new cables, concealed connections, installing recessed lights) must be carried out only by a registered electrician. «Quotation work» (connecting a household lamp to an existing terminal block) is allowed for the homeowner, but everything else requires qualification. Only an electrical professional may connect fixed lighting. All electricians must hold a Finnish certificate (categories S1–S3) and notify Tukes when starting activity. Homeowners do not need to notify Tukes when replacing a chandelier.

When you need a licensed electrician

What the owner can do themselves: replacing bulbs, installing a lamp with a plug into a standard ceiling socket, minor repairs. You may connect a wall or ceiling light to an existing terminal block («sokeripala») yourself. If the chandelier already has a suitable plug, it is enough to hang it on the hook and plug it in. Always switch off the power at the circuit breaker before starting work.

What only professionals do: new wiring from the distribution box, changes to the wiring layout, or installing a light without a standard hook. If you need to connect a chandelier to a new cable, replace a ceiling rose with a DCL socket, or fix a heavy fitting to the ceiling without an existing hook — leave it to a professional. Insurance will not cover damage due to incorrect installation.

Typical ceiling connectors in Finland

In new homes, DCL sockets (to European standard) are used almost everywhere: a ceiling suspension base with a hook where a light with a plug is connected. They are rated for chandeliers up to about 15 kg: you simply hang the light and plug it into the base.

In older housing you will find ceiling «roses» — round sockets (Jakorasia) with screw terminals. To connect: loosen the terminal screws, match the wire colours of the lamp and ceiling (L to L, N to N), and tighten securely. In old wiring the phase is often red or black, neutral grey or blue; if the setup is unclear, call an electrician.

Mounting on different ceilings

General procedure: 1) switch off power at the breaker, 2) install the hook/bracket, 3) run the wiring, 4) connect wires via terminal block or DCL plug, 5) fix the chandelier. Colour code: brown (L), blue (N), yellow-green (earth). If there is no earth, you can use a Class II fitting or call a specialist.

• Concrete ceilings: for a heavy chandelier you may need to drill for mounting plates or a hook — use a hammer drill and wall plugs (or chemical anchors).
• Drywall: use metal anchors («butterfly» type) or anchor fixings; a heavy fitting may need a built-in batten or reinforcement.
• Stretch ceiling: care is required. Usually a mounting plate is fixed to the main ceiling above the stretch, and cables are run through. Do not push the chandelier through the fabric — only use reinforced brackets or anchor systems. If unsure — use an electrician experienced with stretch ceilings.

Earthing and protection classes

Finnish rules require earthing of metal light fittings. If there is a yellow-green wire — connect it to the fitting’s «earth» terminal. If the fitting has no earth contact (Class II), the «earth» should be insulated and secured. In old buildings there may be no earthing — then use a double-insulated fitting. Connect by colour: brown — L, blue — N, yellow-green — earth.

Permits and responsibility

A permit for installing a chandelier is usually not required. Responsibility remains with the owner and the electrician. Incorrect installation may lead to the insurer refusing a claim. Major changes to the electrical system (new circuit, extra box) must be done with Tukes notification and a certified electrician. Ensure the company has Tukes approval and a valid licence.

Time and cost of work
